Martin Dempsey speak during a press conference at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. (Jim Watson / AFP/Getty Images / April 16, 2012)

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is beefing up its spy service to send several hundred undercover intelligence officers to overseas hot spots to steal secrets on national security threats after a decade of focusing chiefly on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The move comes amid concerns that the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s spy service, needs to expand operations beyond the war zones and to work more closely with the CIA, according to a senior Defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the classified program.

The new Defense Clandestine Service will comprise about 15% of the DIA’s workforce. They will focus on gathering intelligence on terrorist networks, nuclear proliferators and other highly sensitive threats around the world, rather than just gleaning tactical information to assist military commanders on the battlefield, the official said.

“You have to do global coverage,” the official said.

Some of the new spies thus are likely to be assigned to targets that now are intelligence priorities, including parts of Africa and the Middle East where Al Qaeda and its affiliates are active, the nuclear and missile programs in North Korea and Iran, and China’s expanding military.

The initiative, which Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta approved last Friday, aims to boost the Pentagon’s role in human intelligence collection, and to assign more case officers and analysts around the globe. The CIA has dominated that mission for decades, and the two agencies have long squabbled over their respective roles.

An internal study by the director of National Intelligence last year concluded that the DIA needed to expand its traditional role and should gather and disseminate more information on global issues. It also found that the DIA did not promote or reward successful case officers, and that many often left for the CIA as a result.

Follow Politics Now on Twitter

Original source: Pentagon increasing spy presence overseas

Defense Intelligence Agency, Pentagon, The Pentagon, Pentagon, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Defense Clandestine Service, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen, Defense Secretary Leon E. Amylin drugs

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, which spurned a $3.5 billion takeover bid from Bristol-Myers Squibb and is fending off a lawsuit from activist investor Carl Icahn, has hired Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs to explore a sale, and started reaching out to potential buyers last week.

Vodafone

UK-based Vodafone is nearing a deal to acquire Cable & Wireless, adding a fixed-line network to its mobile-phone system, sources said. The world’s largest wireless operator is offering between 35 pence and 39 pence (56 cents and 63 cents) a share. The UK target closed at 32 pence on Friday, valuing the company at 879 million pounds ($1.4 billion).

Gas at $3.91

The nation’s average price for regular gas fell 5.44 cents to $3.9127 a gallon, according to a Lundberg survey.

GDP boost

The biggest gain in consumer spending in a year probably helped the economy keep expanding in the first quarter even as fuel costs climbed. Economists are predicting a 2.5 percent increase in GDP.

CHSAA/Private baseball roundup: St. Ray's rips St. Peter's for fourth straight win

Add to Memories Share

St. Raymond just keeps on hitting and – as a result – keeps on winning, too.

Orlando Collado had two hits and four RBIs and Cheyanne Reyes had two hits and two RBIs to lead St. Ray’s to a 12-0, run-rule win over St. Peter’s at Ravens Field in The Bronx.

Julian Monserrate gave up just two hits and struck out seven in five innings for St. Raymond (4-2), which has now won four straight. The Ravens have big games against Cardinal Hayes, Cardinal Spellman and Mount St. Michael coming up this week. St. Peter’s, which meets Moore Catholic twice this week, falls to 0-4.

St. Francis Prep 4, Monsignor McClancy 1: Dylan Lawrence gave up just a run on four hits and struck out three in 5-1/3 innings for St. Francis (3-3). Danny Pellegrino and Gabe Gonzales each had two hits apiece and Jeromi Fernandez crushed a big rally-starting double. McClancy is 3-3.

Bishop Ford 12, Christ the King 0: Nelson Lopez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Eric Tully went 2-for-2 with a two-run double and two runs scored for Ford (4-2), which scored six runs in the third. Helbert Estevez tossed four shutout innings, giving up just a hit, and Ed Veloz pitched a perfect fifth to seal the run-rule victory. Christ the King is 1-5.

ACIS

Berkeley Carroll 7, Long Island Lutheran 1: Anthony Spina struck out six in six innings for the win, he also had two hits and two RBIs, Richie Palacios and Robert Graham each had two hits and scored twice and Max Jens had an RBI and scored once for Berkeley Carroll, which dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 3-1, and is now 11-1 overall and 4-1 in league.

NON-LEAGUE

Fieldston 6, Rye Country Day 4: Max Kasan went the distance and struck out two for the win, Kevin Fich had three hits and three RBIs and Jacob Hochberger had two hits and two RBIs for Fieldston (7-1), which visits Horace Mann Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

Horace Mann 16, Loyola 0: Harrison Bader tripled and homered for Horace Mann (7-2), which faces Fieldston Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

Giants QB Manning 'enjoying every second' of big year

Add to Memories Share

It was less than a year ago that Eli Manning unintentionally sparked “The Great Eli-te Debate,” by saying he belonged in the same class of quarterback as Tom Brady.

Now there is no debate.

The Giants quarterback is a two-time Super Bowl champion. He is willing to take off the helmet and let the masses see there is more to Elisha Nelson Manning than the reserved Southerner with a big right arm.

Manning, following in the footsteps of his brother Peyton and the Patriots’ Brady, will host “Saturday Night Live” on May 5.

“I’m going to keep my day job,’’ he said jokingly.

2012 GIANTS SCHEDULE

Yesterday, Manning was the celebrity of celebrities at BTIG’s 10th annual Commissions for Charity Day in Midtown, which has raised about $20 million benefitting hundreds of charities.

Surrounded by the likes of Joe Namath, Mariano Rivera and John McEnroe, it was Manning who found himself surrounded by autograph seekers and well wishers. He is embracing his new life as an elite quarterback.

“It’s been a wild year in a lot of different ways,’’ Manning told The Post. “From a career standpoint, you know last year I was coming off a rough year, a lot of interceptions, [we] didn’t make the playoffs again. I knew I needed to play better football than what I was playing.

“I never doubted that I could. I was making a lot of plays but then I’d make that one bad decision. I knew if I could change that, we had the offense — along with our defense — to be a good team. We did that. We made the playoffs and got hot at the right time and won another championship which was fun.

“I had the addition of my daughter [Ava] also. So it’s been a big year. It’s been a lot of fun. I’m just enjoying every second of it.’’

Every second.

When asked what is tougher, changing a diaper or reading defenses, Manning showed the sense of humor he has guarded, but those around him appreciate.

“I’ve had more practice reading defenses, let’s say that,’’ he said. “Both of them sometimes will surprise you and you get something that’s unexpected.’’

Manning said he could not reveal much about his SNL host gig, but he hopes it will be entertaining.

“Once you’re around him, once he gets into that certain personality mode where he is like he is when he’s with his teammates, he’s very funny,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

Manning also remains serious about his craft. He said the 2011 season taught him there are levels of greatness that require levels of commitment in the NFL.

“You know, make every mistake there is to make and try to learn from it, not repeating the same mistake,’’ said Manning. “That’s the first step. And then there’s that process of knowing the rules [of an offense] and knowing when to go outside the rules and making yourself even better. You never stop learning this game.’’

Nor do you stop learning the business. Two years ago, Peyton was the hot Manning. Now he will suit up for a new team and try to make the Denver Broncos an elite team. He’s won one ring.

But Eli is one Super Bowl win away from joining Brady and Troy Aikman as three-time champion quarterbacks, and one MVP away from joining Joe Montana as the only three-time winners of that award.

“I’m really just worried about working on my skill set and being ready to be at my best for next year,’’ Manning said. “Make the plays. Whatever the result of that is, that’s what it will be.’’

iPhone bills boost Verizon's first-quarter revenue growth

Add to Memories Share

Holiday sales of the iPhone 4S started to boost revenue at Verizon Communications Inc. in the latest quarter, as subscribers settled in to paying their new monthly bills.

That meant that wireless service revenues grew at their fastest pace in three years at Verizon Wireless. The country's largest cellphone company started selling the iPhone 4 a bit more than a year ago, but sales got a big boost when the 4S model was released in October.

IPhone sales don't boost the results of a cellphone company immediately, because the companies subsidize them by hundreds of dollars to be able to sell the phone for $99 or $199. They then count on making the money back in service fees over a two-year contract.

At Verizon Wireless, the iPhone effect was clear in Thursday's first-quarter report: the average monthly bill for subscribers on contract-based plans was $55.43, up 3.6 percent from a year ago. A few years ago, monthly fees were stagnant at Verizon.

However, the high price of the iPhone means phone companies are struggling to make it pay — most of the profit from the iPhone is flowing to Apple Inc., not the phone companies. Verizon Wireless recently introduced a $30 "upgrade fee" for existing customers trading up to a new phone.

Verizon Wireless gained 501,000 new subscribers under contract-based plans in the quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It's a closely watched figure because contract-based plans are the most lucrative. Verizon is expected to lead the industry this quarter, attracting twice as many new customers as chief rival AT&T Inc., which reports on Tuesday.

Verizon's overall net income was $1.69 billion, or 59 cents per share, in the first three months of 2012, beating the average forecast of analysts by a penny per share. It was up from $1.44 billion, or 51 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 4.6 percent to $28.2 billion from $27 billion a year ago, matching expectations.

Verizon shares rose 56 cents to $38.22 in premarket trading. That is near the upper end of their 52-week range of $32.28 to $40.48 per share.

New York-based Verizon Communications owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless, and the corresponding share of the wireless earnings flow to Verizon's bottom line. The rest goes to joint venture partner Vodafone Group PLC, a British phone company.

Knicks center Chandler likely to make Team USA

Add to Memories Share

With the announcement five days ago LaMarcus Aldridge will undergo season-ending hip injury, Knicks center Tyson Chandler has become a favorite to make the U.S. Olympic team, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Chandler was named as one of the 20 finalists for the Olympic Team named in January. Team USA has just one center on the roster, Dwight Howard, and he’s out indefinitely with a bulging disk. That also bodes well for Chandler’s presence on the club.

Chandler, who had 20 points and seven rebounds in the Knicks’ 118-110 victory over the Celtics Tuesday night at the Garden, is a candidate for the defensive player of the year award and roundly saluted for his leadership on Dallas’ NBA championship-winning team and this season’s Knicks club. Chandler also has a great supporter in former Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, who will return as Team USA assistant.

Team USA CEO Jerry Colangelo and coach Mike Krzyzewski are evaluating the 20 players during their regular season and Chandler fits the bill in every category, especially intangibles and character. Chandler had a good showing on Team USA in the 2010 World Championships. The 12 roster members will be selected in late May.

“I feel like I have a great opportunity to play,’’ Chandler told The Post. “It all comes down to what they feel jells and fits with each other.’’

The Blazers’ Aldridge would have been the favorite as Howard’s backup, if he was healthy. Last week, it was announced he would need arthroscopic surgery to repair a slight labral tear. A surgery date has not been set, but sources said it takes two to four months to heal.

The Olympic team will assemble in Las Vegas for training camp the first week in mid-July and the Games begin in late July.

***

Mike Bibby saw extended action for the first time since January. Bibby had just three points but added six assists. Baron Davis, who interim coach Mike Woodson said was battling a stomach flu, played just 18 minutes. He didn’t have a point and had just one assist.

***

The Knicks make their last visit to New Jersey Wednesday night to face the Nets at the Prudential Center. The rivalry will heat up next season when the Nets get to Brooklyn.

WATCH: Geithner says Romney claim on job losses by women is 'misleading and ridiculous'

Add to Memories Share

WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says a claim by Mitt Romney about disproportionate job losses by women during the Obama administration is "misleading and ridiculous."

Romney said last week that 92.3 percent of jobs lost since President Barack Obama took office were lost by women. He said the "real war on women is being waged by the president's failed economic policies."

While the statistic is accurate, the recession began 13 months before Obama took office. Men have lost more jobs overall during the downturn — 3.4 million, compared with 1.8 million lost by women.

Geithner notes that manufacturing and construction job losses were heavy in the early days of the recession, while professions with more women, such as teaching, were hurt later.

Geithner spoke Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation."
